Yesterday was April 1st but it felt like New Year’s Day. When I woke up with fresh start fever, I felt my inner critic – or my inner mean girl as I call her – saying “April Fools! You don’t get to start over, silly girl!”
But the joke’s on you Jolene (I decided to rename my inner critic in honor of Cowboy Carter).
I know how to give myself a fresh start without starting over. I know how to hit the reset button whenever and as often as I need to.
And everything around me seemed to be in agreement. Spring has sprung and many of us just celebrated Easter. What better way to kick off a fresh start than with a spirit of resurrection? You don’t need to have everything figured out. Just decide on your next best step. That’s your focus for the next 90 days. If you’re not sure what the next best step is, we can help you out in the Collective.
Get Serious
Once you choose your focus, get serious about your goal by doing two things:
- Make time to work on your goal by any means necessary
- Learn what you need to learn to execute with excellence.

Get Noticed
Once you do the work you need to share your work with the world. You can do this through social media, blogging, or a Substack newsletter – just to name a few options. See Jane Write can help you decide which option is best for you and help you get started.
Get Paid
We don’t believe in that starving artist cliché here at SJW HQ. We want you to be a well-fed writer. We want you to get paid for your writing. Maybe you can get paid for work you submit to a literary journal or media outlet. Perhaps you’ll win contests or grants. Maybe you’ll monetize your Substack. Perhaps you’ll get a book deal.
