Tank and the Bangas

If you want to be a successful writer you must learn to find inspiration anywhere. I often get inspired by shows and movies I watch, music I listen to, as well as the things I read. That’s why I occasionally share on the blog what I’m into in hopes that you can find inspiration in these things, too.

Here’s what I’m currently listening to, watching, reading, and obsessing over.

Listening: I’ve been listening to Tank and the Bangas a lot lately because I’m so excited to see them perform live tonight at Art on the Rocks. Every summer the Birmingham Museum of Art hosts three Friday nights of entertainment that feature artist collaborations, interactive performances, food, cocktails and plenty of mixing and mingling. With their eclectic sound that mixes punk, hip-hop, soul and jazz, Tank and the Bangas are the perfect way to kick off the weekend and close out the 2018 AOTR season.

Watching: My DVR is nearly full these days because there’s so much good television on right now. Season 2 of The Bold Type may have recently ended but that has hardly cleared my queue. I still need to catch up on Queen Sugar and Queen of the South. I’m a couple of episodes behind on PowerThe Sinner is back, and this summer I picked up a new guilty pleasure — Miz and Mrs. Don’t judge me.

Also, Greenleaf returns at the end of the month.

Another show I enjoyed this summer was OWN’s new series Love Is. The writer in me appreciates the complexity of each character and the hopeless romantic in me can’t help but root for Nuri and Yasir. But I’m here for their romance not because they’re perfect — because they certainly ARE NOT — but because the show gives the audience glimpses of who they become in the future and I enjoy watching the journey of how they get there.

Reading: I recently started the devotional 100 Days to Brave by Annie Downs. I’m planning to take on new challenges in the next year and I’m hoping this book will give me the courage to do so.

Obsessing over: These days I’m obsessing over how to get it all done. One of my main goals for the summer was to land new paid freelance writing gigs and I can proudly say this is a goal I achieved. But now that the school year has started and I’m back in the classroom I’m struggling to balance it all. Also, I’ve recently fallen in love with blogging again. My goal for this month is to publish new blog posts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and so far so good. I worried this goal would make blogging begin to feel like a chore but instead, it’s made blogging fun again. I even recently launched a new feature — Media Maven.
