Reciting gratitude affirmations can boost your mood almost instantly. But declaring you’re grateful for everything in your life can feel inauthentic when you’re facing challenging times or when the world feels like a dumpster fire.

That’s why I believe that gratitude affirmations work best when you write your own.

How to Write Gratitude Affirmations

Here are 3 simple ways to start writing gratitude affirmations.

Remember the good stuff.

When life is challenging, it’s easy to focus on everything that’s going wrong. But no matter how tough life is, there’s always something that’s going well. Write affirmations that express gratitude for those things. What are things you may take for granted such as having a home, food, or clothes, or having internet access that allows you to read this blog post?

Consider every area of your life – professional, financial, health, relationships, spirituality, home & possessions, hobbies & fun. And don’t forget about your writing life! What opportunities have you had to share your writing with others? Or maybe you need to give thanks for the freedom to write in the first place. Have you found a writing community that you’re grateful for?

Be grateful for lessons learned.

Writing gratitude affirmations doesn’t mean you have to ignore the difficult circumstances of your life. You don’t have to pretend everything in your life is perfect. Instead, consider what you’ve learned from life’s challenges and express gratitude for those lessons.

Have these hardships changed you for the better? If so, be grateful for that shift.

Speak your future into existence.

I’m a huge fan of scripting, which is a journaling practice in which you write about the future you want as if it already is yours. I’ve used scripting to get through some of my toughest times, including a cancer diagnosis. Scripting shifts my attitude, making me more hopeful and optimistic, and helps me look forward to the future even when the present is bleak.

You can use scripting to write gratitude affirmations too. Consider what you want for your future and then give thanks that it is yours.
