Could you publish a new blog post every day for 30 days?

That’s the question I pose to the women of See Jane Write every November for our annual #bloglikecrazy challenge.

You may be thinking that blogging every day for 30 days is, well, crazy. But I’m a believer in the saying “Crazy just might work.”

Here are three reasons why I think you should blog like crazy with me this year.

Creativity: Blogging daily will boost your creativity.

In the foreword for the book Become an Idea Machine, James Altucher says that one of the best ways to boost your creativity is to write down 10 ideas a day. By brainstorming ideas daily you’re exercising your creativity muscles. Altucher writes: “You will be like a superhero. It’s almost a guaranteed membership in the Justice League of America. Every situation you are in, your will have a ton of idea. Any question you are asked, you will know the response. Every meeting you are at, you will take the meeting so far out of the box you’ll be on another planet, if you’re stuck on a desert highway – you will figure the way out, if you need to make money you’ll come up with 50 ideas to make money.”

I believe this applies to blogging, too. Producing this much content in one month will force you to seek inspiration everywhere and to think outside the box. Inspiration can come from things you read — books, poems, short stories, magazine articles, newspaper articles, blog posts. Inspiration can come from TV shows or movies you watch. Inspiration can come from music, social media, conversations with friends, people watching, networking events, parties, church — the list goes on and on.

Start jotting down 10 blog posts ideas a day, every day, TODAY. Soon any writer’s block you may have been plagued with before will be a thing of the past.

Community: Blogging daily can help build your community of readers.

Whether you’re trying to take your blog to the next level or you’re just getting started, blogging every day for 30 days will build the momentum that you need. The more content you produce, the more reasons people have to visit your site. Just be sure the content is of high quality, that you’re promoting your posts, and that you have a way to collect the email addresses of these new readers stopping by your site.

Consistency: Blogging daily will create the writing consistency you need.

Writing is a practice. I say this ALL THE TIME. If you’re a runner and you want to complete your first marathon, you have to train. You have to practice. I consider #bloglikecrazy a writing workout plan.

Some people say you shouldn’t write every day because you should only write when you “feel inspired.” I completely disagree. That’s like saying a runner should only run when she’s in the mood to do so. If I’m training for a race I need to pound the pavement when it’s hot, when it’s cold, and sometimes even in the rain, if necessary.

And so I blog, even when life sucks. I believe the #bloglikecrazy challenge will teach you how to do the same.

Blogging daily for 30 days will also show you exactly what you’re capable of and help you develop the long-term blogging schedule that’s right for you. By reviewing the content you created during #bloglikecrazy and what it took to produce it, you’ll know exactly how often and when you should post going forward. Did you find that each week you had three really strong posts and that the others were mediocre? Did your blog get more traffic on some days than others? Did you create your best content when you wrote late at night or first thing in the morning? Answering these kinds of questions will help you develop an editorial calendar and a writing plan to keep you consistent in the future.
