Your 4th Quarter Comeback: Journal Prompts for Your Fall Reset

My 4th Quarter Comeback Playbook. That’s what I call the goals and plans I drafted for the final three months of 2026.

I am a college football fan, and even though it stresses me out when my team isn’t moving the ball down the field like I want them to, I must admit that I love the thrill of a 4th quarter comeback. A few weeks ago, I realized I needed a 4th quarter comeback of my own.

Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been blessed this year. I now have the job I’ve dreamed of since I was 15 years old. I had the chance to be in conversation with author Tayari Jones for her latest book tour. I’ve traveled and had lots of fun in my Magic City too. But between health issues, hard circumstances with my parents, and constantly feeling overwhelmed, this year has been hard and has left me feeling like I’m losing.

But am I?

6 Questions to Ask Yourself This Week

On Friday, April 17, I had the honor of delivering the keynote address at the Youth Leadership Birmingham graduation. Youth Leadership Birmingham (YLB) is a program by Leadership Birmingham for high school sophomores and juniors who are dedicated to creating meaningful change in their community and the city we call home. Founded in 1986 by visionary Leadership Birmingham alumni who recognized the need to cultivate young leaders, YLB creates transformative experiences by bringing together diverse student cohorts across Jefferson County for comprehensive leadership development – all at no cost to participants.

Many of the parents and other adults in the room told me that even though my talk was for the kids, they found themselves taking notes. What a compliment! So, I’ve decided to share my remarks here on the See Jane Write blog.

My New Word for the Year 2026

I’m ditching my word for the year 2026 because New York Times bestselling author Tayari Jones told me I should.

On Sunday, March 15, 2026, I had the honor of moderating a discussion and Q&A with Jones when she visited Birmingham as part of her national book tour for her new novel Kin, which debuted #3 on the New York Times Bestseller list and is an Oprah’s Book Club pick. (You can read highlights from the discussion in The Birmingham Times.)

Word for the Year 2026

What’s your word for the year 2026?

I’ve been choosing a word for the year for several years, and it’s a practice I’ve happily passed on to the women of the See Jane Write Collective.

Some years, I’ve picked three words. In other years, I’ve chosen a phrase.

Some years, I get completely obsessed with the word that I chose. It becomes my mantra or prayer that I constantly whisper. Other years—like this year, I must admit—I forget which word I picked until someone asks me.

How to Set Writing Goals That Actually Work

I’m obsessed with goal setting. I set writing goals and goals for other areas of my life each year, each quarter, and each month. Because I’m so passionate about goal setting, I’m constantly reading books, attending workshops and listening to podcasts to help me get better at setting and achieving my goals. I take what I learn, tweak it and try it out. Then I figure out how to share what I’ve gleaned from my personal experiences with you. That’s why I get so excited for my annual Write the Vision Workshop! (This year’s workshop is on Sunday, December 14 at 4 p.m. CT. You can sign up here.)

Why You Aren’t Achieving Your Writing Goals

If you HATE goal setting, it’s probably because you’re not following through. And if you’re setting writing goals each year and nothing in your writing life is changing, chances are it’s NOT because of laziness. You work hard. Probably too hard. You are NOT lazy. But I think I know what’s holding you back.
