How to Write Consistently

If you’re struggling to write consistently, you may think this is a sign that you need to put your writing dreams on hold. But it’s not. Nor is it a sign that you’re lazy. Because you’re not! You just need to shift your attitude and change your approach.

Everything you want is on the other side of consistency.

This is the quote I’m repeating to myself again and again in this season.

More than a quote or affirmation, it’s beginning to feel like a prayer or incantation.

As I looked back on the year so far, I realized everything I’ve accomplished has come from consistency. And for every goal I’ve failed to realize, I can plainly see that my stumbling block was lack of consistency.

But consistency has a bit of a PR problem.

Your 4th Quarter Comeback: Journal Prompts for Your Fall Reset

My 4th Quarter Comeback Playbook. That’s what I call the goals and plans I drafted for the final three months of 2026.

I am a college football fan, and even though it stresses me out when my team isn’t moving the ball down the field like I want them to, I must admit that I love the thrill of a 4th quarter comeback. A few weeks ago, I realized I needed a 4th quarter comeback of my own.

Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been blessed this year. I now have the job I’ve dreamed of since I was 15 years old. I had the chance to be in conversation with author Tayari Jones for her latest book tour. I’ve traveled and had lots of fun in my Magic City too. But between health issues, hard circumstances with my parents, and constantly feeling overwhelmed, this year has been hard and has left me feeling like I’m losing.

But am I?

6 Questions to Ask Yourself This Week

On Friday, April 17, I had the honor of delivering the keynote address at the Youth Leadership Birmingham graduation. Youth Leadership Birmingham (YLB) is a program by Leadership Birmingham for high school sophomores and juniors who are dedicated to creating meaningful change in their community and the city we call home. Founded in 1986 by visionary Leadership Birmingham alumni who recognized the need to cultivate young leaders, YLB creates transformative experiences by bringing together diverse student cohorts across Jefferson County for comprehensive leadership development – all at no cost to participants.

Many of the parents and other adults in the room told me that even though my talk was for the kids, they found themselves taking notes. What a compliment! So, I’ve decided to share my remarks here on the See Jane Write blog.

Word for the Year 2026

What’s your word for the year 2026?

I’ve been choosing a word for the year for several years, and it’s a practice I’ve happily passed on to the women of the See Jane Write Collective.

Some years, I’ve picked three words. In other years, I’ve chosen a phrase.

Some years, I get completely obsessed with the word that I chose. It becomes my mantra or prayer that I constantly whisper. Other years—like this year, I must admit—I forget which word I picked until someone asks me.

My Mid-Year Mantras: Making the Most of the Rest of 2025

One of my favorite podcasters – Les Alfred of the She’s So Lucky podcast — recently released an episode during which she shared the Lucky Girl Commandments – a list of tips or words of wisdom to help us all create our own luck for the rest of the year and beyond. And of course, this inspired me to write some commandments of my own. I’m an Enneagram 1, which means I crave order. Rules don’t feel like restrictions to me. Instead, they’re the boundaries I need to keep from running myself off a cliff. (Side note: I also give myself permission to ditch any and all rules that don’t align with who I am and what I want. For example, you say every woman should be a mother. I say I’m quite content living my rich auntie life. But I digress.)

Because I know the word “commandments” can be triggering to some (#churchhurt), I’m calling these my mid-year mantras instead. Here are the rules I’m following to make the most of the rest of 2025.
