If you’re a style blogger in Birmingham, this week is your content Christmas because Magic City Fashion Week is finally here!
For the past three months, Magic City Fashion Week creators Daniel Grier and Derek Matthews (the designers behind Splashed by DKG) have been hosting events meant to cultivate, connect, and showcase Birmingham’s creative community including designers, beauty industry professionals, photographers, videographers, models, and bloggers. And it’s all been leading up to this — a week of fashion shows sure to bring more magic to the Magic City.
Magic City Fashion Week organizers have partnered with Birmingham AIDS Outreach for its inaugural multi-day event, which is set to take place Oct. 24-28 in conjunction with festivities for the 76th Annual Magic City Classic. A party with a purpose, Magic City Fashion Week will also include a series of educational events on HIV prevention and more.
Magic City Fashion Week kicks off Tuesday, Oct. 24 with an HIV 101 Learning Lab at Birmingham AIDS Outreach from 1 to 2:30 p.m. That evening the Tuesday Tailored Men’s Fashion Showcase will be held at Tres’ Fine Dressing, at the site of the historic Cotton’s Department Store in downtown Ensley.
On Wednesday, Oct. 25 a Trans 101 Learning Lab will be held at the Magic City Acceptance Center from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The Everyday Woman Wednesday Fashion Showcase is set for 6 to 8 p.m. at Belk in the Summit and will feature designs from the Lily Pulitzer collection.
A PrEP Learning Lab is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26 and that evening an Upscale Streetstyle Fashion Showcase will be held at Macy’s in Brookwood Village from 6 to 8 p.m. The show will feature a look at fall fashion trends, music, appetizers and more.
The biggest event of the week takes place on Friday, Oct. 27. The Splashiversary Emerging Designer competition will be hosted by Ty Hunter and Raquel Smith of Beyonce’s style team. The show will feature the works of five emerging designers competing for a prize package valued at $5,000. The show will also include looks from Macy’s and luxury streetwear by Splashed by DKG. This event is set for 6 to 11 p.m. and will be held at the Goldstein & Cohen building in Ensley.
For their big finale, the Magic City Fashion Week team will participate in the Magic City Classic Parade on Saturday, Oct. 28. with an HIV awareness demonstration.
