1. #BlackGirlMagic in Rio
Of course I’ve been over the moon about the medals on medals female athletes have been winning at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, but I’m especially giddy for all the #blackgirlmagic that went down Thursday night. Simone Biles, who is already being proclaimed as the greatest gymnast ever, won the gold medal in all-around gymnastics and Simone Manuel made history by becoming the first African-American woman to win a gold medal in an individual swimming event for the United States.
2. Female Athletes Who Overcame Adversity While Making Olympic History
Makers.com took a look at several women who’ve had to overcome great adversity while making their Olympic dreams come true including swimmer Kathleen Baker who has Crohn’s disease.
3. 22 Amazing Photos of Women Olympians Screaming
When I see an Olympian, male or female, crying tears of joy it always touches my heart. But when I see a female Olympian screaming in celebration it makes me feel like I can conquer anything. So this BuzzFeed post sharing 22 amazing photos of women Olympians screaming their f*cking heads off gave me so much life!
4. Babe calls out sexist media coverage of the Olympics…
Of course all the sexist media coverage of the female athletes made it hard out here for a feminist, but Babe got me back in the zone with the hilarious article, “Congrats girl! Fiance of former Miss California scoops his 25th medal,” AKA – if we talked about male Olympians the way we talk about female athletes.
5. … and Bustle does too
Bustle writer Gabrielle Moss also penned the satirical piece “Some Guy’s Wife wins Gold Medal at Rio Olympics.” Here’s an excerpt:
In a shocking upset today that had fans cheering and competitors picking their jaws up off the floor, Team USA nabbed yet another gold medal — this time for the women’s 100,000 meter run, courtesy of track and field competitor Jim’s Wife. Many are calling Jim’s Wife’s win the “Cinderella story” of the Rio Games; after competing at three previous Games without a single win, Jim’s Wife — who athletic experts agree “looks pretty good for her age” — has achieved a startling come-from-behind victory, overtaking early favorites for the gold like Japan’s Lady Who Just Had A Baby and Brazil’s own Luiz’s On-And-Off Girlfriend.
What made you a happy feminist this week?
I was acting a fool in my house…laughing, crying and clapping until my hands hurt! What made it special was that my 7 year old daughter got to witness females (especially the ones who look like her) become record-breaking champions. It is a remarkable thing to see us shining, in spite of these times when so many negative ideas, beliefs and media set us back. Magic, indeed
Yes! And I agree that the victories of #TeamSimone are especially important for little black girls. Such an inspiration they are!
