In 2019 See Jane Write established a partnership with Reckon Women, a platform created by AL.com and Alabama Media Group’s Reckon Alabama to help share the stories of Alabama women.
Today Reckon Alabama is Reckon and Reckon Women is now Honey.
Each week the Honey Voices column features an essay from a woman or member of the LGBTQ+ community. The essays also were featured in the Honey newsletter. I have the honor of recruiting writers and editing content for this column. Read on to learn more…
In 2021 the Reckon Women newsletter got a makeover and is now, Honey, “a sweet spot for girls, gays, and theys.”
We want your stories for the Honey Voices column.
We’re looking for essays by women and the LGBTQ community that boldly delve into the topics we’ve been told to keep quiet about.
In a Q&A with Honey editor and creator Abbey Crain, she said these are the kinds of essays she wants to see in the column:
I want to hear your stories about you championing the causes you care about, the ones you think should be talked about more in the South. I want to hear the stories passed down through generations and how YOU changed the narrative. I want to hear your queer ballads to your child self, your celebrations of Southern culture or your journey turning away from the things you were taught. I can’t wait to hear what you come up with.
Pieces should be 600 to 800 words. Do not submit previously published works. Essays centered on personal stories are preferred. Payment is $50. We are accepting pieces from people outside of the South as well.
Send your submissions to firstname.lastname@example.org.
