Join Birmingham Public Library for Bards & Brews Open Mic at East Village Arts in East Lake. Thed Weller will serve as host, and there will be live music by local artist G.I. Magus. Attendees can enjoy free craft beer samples, provided by Birmingham District Brewing Co. Bards & Brews is made possible in part by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts to the Friends Foundation of the Birmingham Public Library. Admission is free. Jones, author of Lullaby for the Grieving, and Salaam Green, author of The Other Revival: Poems & Reckonings, will share the stage to discuss their new works, their tenures as poet laureates, and their creative processes. Quilt of Souls: An Evening with Phyllis Biffle Elmore

Tuesday, February 17 at 6 p.m. CT.
In conjunction with The March Quilts, a local nonprofit whose annual art projects commemorate themes of civil and human rights, author Phyllis Biffle Elmore and radio host Burgin Mathews will discuss her memoir, Quilt of Souls. Elmore weaves back and forth through time, telling true tales of racism, sexism, and colorism, but also of strength and pride, creating a multi-generational patchwork honoring her family and ancestors. The State of the Algorithm Exhibit Opening Reception + Roundtable Discussion

This event — all about propaganda, media, and technology today — includes a tour of (The) Victors Write the Algorithm exhibit and a panel discussion about today’s media landscape and how it compares to earlier moments in American history. Local media professionals, journalists, historians, and cultural voices will explore how technology and social media shape the media we consume, and how power, bias, and propaganda continue to influence the stories we believe and how communities are represented.
