New blog feature alert!
Life Lately is a new feature to the See Jane Write blog that will allow me to share snippets of my life beyond the laptop in a more in-depth way than I can on Instagram.
My hope is to share what I’m watching, reading, listening to, and obsessing over while still telling you a bit more about my writing life with the goal of sparking your creativity along the way.
Let’s jump in…
What’s bringing you joy right now?
A friend of mine asked me this question over lunch recently, and I was quite shocked at my answer.
I didn’t have one.
Nothing in my professional life is bringing me joy right now, and quite frankly, I’m not sure how I got here or what to do about it.
To share this makes me nervous. When you’re a coach or the leader of a community like the See Jane Write Collective, you feel this pressure to pretend you have it all together, and people always expect you to have something uplifting or inspiring to say. But lately – I’ve got nothing!
But perhaps my honesty is what I have to offer. It’s okay to not be okay.
Right now, I’m obsessing over rediscovering and reclaiming my joy.
Maybe this new feature – a feature that gives me permission to blog for the love of writing without worrying about SEO – is a first step.
So I invite you to spend some time with your journal and contemplate this question for yourself:
What’s bringing you joy right now?
Currently
Here’s what I’m currently into…
Watching: I’m hate watching And Just Like That on HBO Max with the rest of America. Meanwhile, I’m genuinely enjoying Smoke on Apple TV+ and am often counting down the days until a new episode. Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett are incredible.
Reading: After finishing Kennedy Ryan’s Skyland series, I am still in my romance novel era, and I love it. Currently, I’m reading The Best Man: Unfinished Business by Malcolm D. Lee and Jayne Allen. Romance novels are a great escape when the world is a dumpster fire.
Listening: My playlists have been all over the place lately. On any given day, I might be listening to Beyonce, Madison McFerrin or Elvis. Of course, I went to one of the Cowboy Carter shows in Atlanta. My thoughts on the show were quoted in an article. And you can check out my obligatory recap IG post here.
Let me know in the comments what you’re into right now.
Love this new edition! Hang in there. This too shall pass—Truth not toxic positivity. Ask me how I know.
I’m reading Horse by Geraldine Brooks and rereading The Street by Ann Petry.
I’m listening to Ledisi, Leslie Odom Jr., and various podcasts.
I’m watching The Righteous Gemstones.
I’m also submitting poems to lit magazines and contest!
So glad you’re submitting your work!
Thanks for sharing how you’re handling life. Your openness makes it easier for me to share that I’m not always okay.
As far as reading, I’m wrapping up the Broken Earth Trilogy by N. K. Jemison. It’s amazing.
I’m late to The Gilded Age, and I’m happy I have three seasons to watch at my leisure.
I’m listening to old bands ie. EWF, Atlantic Star, Ohio Players, and Lakeside, The Isley’s while I rearrange my closets and deep clean my house.
That’s a great playlist!
