beyonce is my spirit animal

Well, I did it. I snagged two floor seat tickets to Beyonce’s Formation Tour!

One of my best friends and I will be heading to the Nashville show come May 5!

Ever since Mrs. Carter dropped her new single “Formation” the day before the Super Bowl I have, of course, been thinking of lessons we lady bloggers and lady bosses can learn from the message of “Formation” and from the public’s reaction to the song and video.

And her song also inspired me to create a new mini e-course that I’m excited to tell you about today!

But first, here are five things I think Beyonce’s “Formation” teaches us:

Embrace who you are and be yourself, unapologetically. Beyonce’s new song and video are an in-your-face celebration of her black Southern heritage. She will not be ashamed of her baby’s big hair or her man’s big nose despite the fact that certain black hair textures and afrocentric features have been disparaged in the media and not recognized as beautiful. And also, she’s got hot sauce in her bag. (Swag!)

And it’s not just Beyonce’s hard-core fans joining in on this party. I’ve seen several folks on my social media timelines saying things like, “I’m not a member of the BeyHive, but I may be interested in attending the next meeting.” (We meet on the 4th. Wink.)

So what makes you unique? What’s your story? Have you found your blogging voice? Have you defined your personal brand?

When you figure out who you really are as a woman and as a blogger and begin to show that to the world, you will attract the readers who will connect most with your content.

Stop trying to be everything to everybody. Obviously, not everyone was excited as I and the BeyHive were about “Formation.” Beyonce’s new style of music is certainly an acquired taste. Some may be offended by her explicit lyrics. Some may simply not like the sound. While others may not get it AT ALL and go so far as to accuse Beyonce of spreading hate.

Before you start embracing your authentic blogging voice, you need to understand and accept that not everyone is going to like it. And that’s OK. You can’t be everything to everybody. As I often tell my blog coaching clients, when you try to speak to everyone you end up speaking to no one. You must nail down your niche. And you must identify your ideal reader and only worry about speaking to her.
dream it

Be willing to put in work. In my opinion, Beyonce is the hardest working woman in show business. Last weekend she dropped a new single with a groundbreaking video, gave one of the best Super Bowl halftime shows in history AND announced a new world tour. IN ONE WEEKEND. It was like the perfect sales funnel!

So are you willing to not just dream it, but also to work hard and grind ‘til you own it?

If so, you’ve got to get serious about being consistent. You’ve got to be willing to put in work, even if that means late nights or early mornings or sometimes both.

Cause conversation. Last weekend EVERYONE was talking about Beyonce and because we’re now all fighting with Ticketmaster trying to be a part of this tour, talk of Queen Bey is still buzzing in the air. What are you doing to build buzz about your blog and personal brand? Are you maximizing social media? Are you networking and hosting live events? Are you guest blogging and getting media coverage?

Build your own BeyHive. My husband, who is a music blogger and actually not a fan of Beyonce’s new song, often jokes that Beyonce could release a single simply singing the ABC song and her die-hard fans would still buy it. I’m not sure that’s true, but I see his point. Those of us who love Beyonce, REALLY LOVE BEYONCE. We are the BeyHive and we are her ride or die chicks. And I’m convinced that every successful lady blogger has a BeyHive of her own. But the key to keeping your fans loyal, I think, is to NOT release a single simply singing the ABC song. I am a fan of Beyonce because her videos are like works of art and her song lyrics make me feel as if I can conquer the world. Your blog content needs to be epic and needs to make your readers feel as if they can slay — all day.
