Writing is a communal act.

Now you may be thinking, “No, it’s not! We must write in solitude to produce our best work.”

But as Natalie Goldberg says in her book Writing Down the Bones, “Contrary to popular belief, a writer is not Prometheus alone on a hill of fire. We are arrogant to think we alone have a totally original mind.”

In other words, everything we write is somehow influenced by the work of writers who have come before us.

But it goes even deeper than that.

Goldberg goes on to say, “So writing is not just writing. It is also having a relationship with other writers.”

She calls us to be tribal writers, to write for the people and to surround ourselves with other people who write.

I’ve long understood the importance of having a writing tribe. That’s why I started See Jane Write.

I know that having a tribe will help you keep writing even when you don’t feel like it and that same tribe will read your work once you’re ready to share it with the world.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve shared blog posts about my journey of starting and growing See Jane Write. You can find them hereherehere, and here.

Now allow me to leave you with this from Goldberg: “Become big and write with the whole world in your arms.”
