Saturday I attended the 7th annual Visions Natural Hair and Health Expo in Birmingham where natural hair and beauty vloggers The GlamTwinz were special guests.

I attend the expo regularly as it always proves to be a great time and an opportunity to try out new hair care products and learn new hair care tips. But because the event draws influencers like The GlamTwinz I also often learn how to be a better content creator, too.

Here are three tips I picked up from the talk that GlamTwinz Kendra and Kelsey Murrell gave during the expo.

Nail down your niche. The GlamTwinz say they started their YouTube channel, which has over 630,000 subscribers because they were constantly getting questions about their natural hair. So if you’re wondering what you should blog or vlog about consider choosing the topic that people are always asking to “pick your brain about.”

The things you choose to vlog or blog about could even lead to a book. Kendra and Kelsey shared that their book The GlamTwinz Guide to Longer, Healthier Hair started as a YouTube video. In this video, they shared 10 tips for longer, healthier hair. The video became so popular they decided to turn each tip into a chapter and a book idea was born!

Enhance your expertise. One of the things I admire most about the GlamTwinz is their dedication to their niche. The tips they give about hair care aren’t just from trial and error. They went to cosmetology school to get formally educated on hair and beauty. You should be willing to invest in yourself, too, whether that means taking a writing, blogging, or video editing class or learning more about marketing and entrepreneurship.

Reimagine and reinvent. It’s no secret that YouTube is oversaturated with hair and beauty vloggers. So how do the GlamTwinz standout? “You have to reinvent yourself, constantly,” Kendra said during their talk at the expo. We writers, bloggers, and entrepreneurs must do the same. We should always be thinking about how we can upgrade our work and our personal brand.

How will you reinvent yourself?

Hair Care Tips from the GlamTwinz

Of course, the GlamTwinz gave plenty of hair care tips during their talk, too. The Montgomery, Alabama natives stressed the importance of knowing your hair and doing what’s best for your hair, not simply doing what every other curly girl is doing. When transitioning from chemically straightened to natural hair, they said that a braid-out or twist-out is a great way to make the texture of your hair more consistent.

Kelsey, a self-proclaimed product junkie, says there’s nothing wrong with using drugstore products on your hair in you’re on a budget. Rinse out conditioners by brands like Aussie Moist and Herbal Essence’s Hello Hydration can also be used as a styler.

I, too, am a product junkie and so one of the things I enjoy most about the Natural Hair & Health Expo is finding new products to try. This year I attended as a VIP Influencer guest which means I received a swag bag of over $100 worth of products!

The bag included the Pure Luxury Hair Repair Treatment and Pure Luxury Argan Curl Enhancing Cream from Rich Hair Care, an Anti-Itch & Tension Relief oil and Almond & Avocado Detangling Leave-In Conditioner from Design Essentials, the Detangling Co-Wash from Mielle Organics, and Curl Repair Leave-In from Creme of Nature.

I’ve already started using the Creme of Nature leave-in, as well as the Creme of Nature Hair Milk that I picked up at their booth at the expo, and I think I’m hooked!
